LIVE: is the SPCA in South Africa no better than a money driven Cruella De Vil (101 Dalmations film)
Tonight I am joined by a dog breeder, Debbie, who has breeding Yorkies for years in Howick, Kwazulu Natal. In fact her whole life has been dedicated to breeding her dogs without any issues - this is her business - her income to survive. Now the SPCA in Umgeni have stolen her Yorkies, not allowed her or her vet access to them and have issued her with a bill of over R100,000 for unknown "services" after abducting her dogs.
Some branches of the SPCA in South Africa, like Umgeni, target wealthy or long standing dog breeders with nebulous claims - their only interest is extortion using their powers under the pre-1994 period.
Like Cruella De Vil in that iconic film the 101 Dalmations some, not all, branches of the SPCA in South Africa are now destroying the livelihood of the dog owners, breeders and the welfare of their dogs.
Tonight we expose the Umgeni SPCA and the lawyers who are sending letters of demand for astronomical amounts to a dog breeder in Howick while dogs and other animals dying of starvation in townships are ignored because there is no financial return.
Our guest has suffered severe health issues as a result and hopefully will be able to sue the SPCA for their predatory use of their powers.
Now it turns out that the Umgeni SPCA have not been paying the local municipality to run the dog pound: https://www.citizen.co.za/witness/news/spca-closes-pound-20190714/
